The EU wants to secure its supply of raw materials. To this end, the European Parliament adopted the Critical Raw Materials Act in December 2023. One of these measures, namely the selection and promotion of certain strategic projects, has now been implemented. Among other things, lithium production in the Barroso agricultural world heritage site in Portugal is on the list. How the local population is fighting against lithium mining in Barroso and what the mining could have consequences is what this episode of Compass World Economy To Go is about.
