The EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement between the EU and Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay (Mercosur countries) are becoming more and more likely. It could be submitted to the EU Council for a vote as early as the second half of 2020. The agreement will increase trade in climate-damaging products, overexploitation of the Amazon rainforest, and inequality between and within economic blocs. This is another reason why the Austrian government and the parliaments of the Netherlands and Wallonia have announced that they will not sign the agreement. The Federal Government has made the EU-Mercosur Agreement a priority for the EU Council Presidency starting on 1 July and supports the agreement in its current form. What is the deal about and what is the threat of environmental degradation, climate change and rising inequality? That's what our new podcast is about.
