Nickel is needed for the energy transition – but the Philippines is paying a high price for mining

Nickel mining is booming, especially in the Philippines: Nickel is a key raw material for batteries and thus also for electromobility. While Indonesia is expanding its domestic processing and exporting less nickel, nickel mining is increasingly moving to the Philippines, with serious consequences for people and the environment. Michael Reckordt, consultant for raw materials policy at PowerShift, was on the road in the mining regions.
