In spring 2020, a deal drew attention through much criticism: The EU-China Comprehensive Investment Agreement (CAI). It is intended to re-regulate the economic relations between the European and Chinese markets and even contain provisions on environmental, climate and occupational safety. After the conclusion of the agreement, the European Commission patted itself on the shoulder in the usual manner and spoke of its value-based trade policy, while the European Parliament finally firmly opposed it. What exactly is the agreement about and what does it say about EU-China relations? Where did the conflict come from and would it still be possible for it to come into force?
In this episode, we talk to an expert from Hong Kong who wants to remain undetected due to the threat of repression, as well as Merle Groneweg, who works at PowerShift on trade, raw materials and transport policy.
