Why ratification should be avoided
In the summer of 2025, the European Commission intends to submit the EU trade agreement with Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) to the Council of the EU for ratification. However, in its current version, the agreement contains further deteriorations for environmental protection and human rights compared to previous drafts, which were already very problematic. For example, it introduces a novel right of action against the sustainability laws of the European Green Deal and undermines the state enforcement of environmental and social standards.
The new study, which PowerShift is publishing together with Misereor and Brot für die Welt, describes the risks of the agreement for climate, forest and species protection, human rights and the economic development of the Mercosur states. In view of the serious consequences of the agreed tariff cuts and deregulations, it warns against ratifying this out-of-date treaty.
