Copper mining at the Ecuadorian Mirador Mine

Copper from the Amazon rainforest of the indigenous Shuar

Several thousand hectares of rainforest are cleared for the Mirador mine in Ecuador. Among other things, copper foils for the production of lithium-ion batteries and electronic circuit boards for electric cars are produced from the copper. It is very likely that these will also be used in the German automotive industry. In Ecuador, people complain of serious human rights violations, including murder, violence and brutal resettlement. Millions of cubic meters of mine wastewater contaminate the rivers. It threatens to break the dams of the settling basins with millions of tons of toxic mine sludge up to the Amazon.

Together with Rettet den Regenwald, we have launched a petition calling for a consistent turnaround in raw materials so that the environment and human rights are no longer in the second row. Sign our petition for a turnaround in raw materials!
