The challenges of the climate crisis, growing global inequalities and ecological destruction call for a profound transformation of our economic and trade policies. Against this background, we have critically analysed the provisions on trade and investment policy of the coalition agreement. Our assessment depends in particular on whether the agreements are suitable for driving a just transition in international trade, binding human rights and environmental standards globally and contributing to the achievement of the Paris climate goals – or whether they ultimately perpetuate existing structures of inequality and environmental degradation.
