The Federal Government's task is to create the framework conditions for a livable future in our society and to ensure prosperity for all. However, the increasing consumption of natural resources, including metallic raw materials, endangers our livelihoods.
While the German Raw Materials Strategy and the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) lead the debate in the EU and Germany primarily from the point of view of their own security of supply, essential questions remain largely unanswered. How must raw materials policy be designed to ensure a good life for all within planetary boundaries and to protect the environment and climate, as well as the rights of all people?
As a broad alliance of human rights, development and environmental organizations, we call for a change in raw materials. This includes: reducing the demand for primary raw materials in absolute terms, building a global circular economy, enforcing the highest human rights, social and environmental standards in raw materials value chains, and strengthening civil society and rights holders worldwide.
