Travel guide: EU-Mercosur – A toxic agreement

The EU-Mercosur Agreement and the trade in pesticides

The “Travel Guide: EU-Mercosur – a toxic agreement” leads to the most popular destinations for pesticides produced in Germany, in this case the four Mercosur countries: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The trade agreement that the EU has concluded (but not yet signed) with these countries would favour the import of pesticides into Mercosur. It is also driving an agricultural model that depends on the consumption of large quantities of pesticides. Among other things, German pesticide manufacturers such as Bayer and BASF, which already export pesticides to this region, would benefit, including those that are not authorised in the EU due to their dangerous nature.

More information on how the EU-Mercosur Agreement promotes trade in pesticides, contributes to the deforestation of rainforests and to the poisoning of people and the environment, especially in Mercosur countries, can be found in the publication ‘EU-Mercosur – a toxic agreement’, which PowerShift publishes together with Naturefriends, ATTAC Germany, AndersHandeln Austria, the Forum Environment and Development, the Research and Documentation Centre Chile-Latin America (FDCL) and Campact.
