How trade agreements could contribute to a more sustainable global economy
In many cases, trade agreements endanger ambitious environmental and climate protection. But that doesn't have to be the case. A variety of proposals exist on how trade agreements can be designed to promote environmental and climate protection. For example, trade agreements could support the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements, promote the spread of climate-friendly technologies and restrict trade in climate-damaging goods. They could also demand compliance with human rights and environmental due diligence obligations of globally operating companies. For this to succeed, the opening of trade policy to social interests beyond the influential business associations is necessary.
In this comprehensive, English-language study, a number of innovative and practical proposals are made on how environmental and climate protection can be integrated into trade contracts. These proposals are directly applicable and are therefore an important reference for decision-makers and civil society working towards a more sustainable trade policy.
