The planned trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur countries affects 774 million people. At the end of 2024, the 25-year negotiations were concluded. It is heavily criticized for having a profound impact on the environment, agriculture, human rights and democratic co-determination. Civil society organisations warn of rising deforestation, social inequalities and lack of public scrutiny. Particularly problematic is the European Commission's initiative to split the agreement through so-called "splitting" in order to avoid the participation of national parliaments. This process weakens democratic decision-making processes and damages trust in the EU institutions. The criticism is also directed against the lack of transparency and participation during the negotiations. The information paper examines these developments in detail and warns of the risks of such a trade policy practice.
