On the occasion of the planned modernisation of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), we – as one of 278 civil society organisations and trade unions – are calling for the radical restructuring of the Energy Charter Treaty in an open letter to German and European politicians. In the letter, we identify the core issues of the ECT and call on policy makers to remove the provisions on fossil fuel protection and investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) from the treaty and to stop the process of geographical expansion of the treaty. In its current state, the treaty is incompatible with the Paris climate agreement. If these demands cannot be implemented quickly, we call for joint termination.
