In 1993, shortly after the founding of the Forum Umwelt & Entwicklung, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs invited German NGOs to a round table discussion on the topics of GATT and the Uruguay Round, as well as the OECD debates on trade and development. In the run-up to this meeting, the invited NGOs decided to set up a working group.
In the future, this should serve as a link in trade issues between civil society and government and be connected to the Forum Umwelt & Entwicklung. At present, the activities of AG Handel are designed and supported by around 15 active members, as well as by 30 passive members.
