Metal requirements for grid expansion

Power poles before sunset as a visualization for grid expansion and the associated metal requirements

The expansion of electricity grids is central to the energy transition. At the same time, the growing demand for metals such as copper and aluminium in grid expansion is leading to new global dependencies and massive environmental and human rights problems in the mining regions. Our new factsheet sheds light on the current state of grid expansion in Germany, the associated metal requirements and the social and ecological consequences of raw material mining. It shows why a resource-saving energy transition is urgently needed and what measures need to be taken.
