Briefing: Ten recommendations for a more sustainable trade in raw materials

Container ship

Currently, the global commodity trade is characterized by a growing consumption of metallic raw materials. However, the extraction and further processing of these raw materials contribute massively to the destruction of our livelihoods: PowerShift has therefore sent a comprehensive briefing to the newly elected members of the Bundestag, in which we outline concrete measures for a just and sustainable turnaround in raw materials.

In view of the serious social and environmental consequences of the global trade in raw materials, we call for a reorientation of Germany's raw materials policy: Reduction of primary raw material consumption, expansion of the circular economy and compliance with the highest human rights and ecological standards in mining. As a major importer of raw materials, Germany has a special responsibility to decisively promote this raw material transition.
