The Swedish energy group Vattenfall is suing Germany for 6.1 billion euros in damages before a private, international arbitration court. The Group's argument: The nuclear phase-out in 2011 devalued the lifetimes of its nuclear reactors. The nuclear phase-out has destroyed its future profits. Sounds weird? It is, too. However, international corporations regularly sue states for ‘damage compensation’ if they enact new regulations to protect the environment, the climate or consumers.
