Couple therapists specialising in international trade warn: If the ‘marriage contract’ between the EU and Mercosur is concluded, there is a risk of massive side effects. Biodiversity, indigenous peoples and the South American jungles are at stake. A crime novel in three acts.

2025 is already a wild year for international trade in all respects. And in these turbulent times, two of the world’s largest economic blocs want to enter the ‘holy state of marriage’: The European Union and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay).

But the prenuptial agreement, also known as the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, not only triggers cheering storms. For years, connoisseurs of this unequal relationship have expressed environmental, climate and human rights concerns. Farmers want to boycott the wedding. Trade union movements in the EU and South America speak of a "death sentence for good jobs". The European Consumer Protection Association criticises inadequate standards. It seems that this marriage is made primarily out of geopolitical interests and in the interests of large corporations. The new federal government, on the other hand, congratulates in advance and wants to put its signature under the contract as soon as possible. But what exactly is signed there? This is what we want to reveal at Inside EU-Mercosur.

From the 27th of May always on Tuesdays, 20.15-21.00 dive on Zoom We are heading into the depths of the controversial EU-Mercosur trade agreement. The series is especially aimed at people who want to better understand what the agreement is about and want to take action on it.
