In this year's commodity turnaround crash course, we are focusing on aluminium. Light metal is central to future technologies such as electromobility and renewable energies, but its production is one of the most resource-intensive and energy-intensive in the world. The mining of bauxite, the ore used to extract aluminium, leads to massive environmental degradation and human rights violations in countries such as Guinea and Brazil.
Berlin serves us as a venue – not only as a venue for political debates and civil society networking, but also as a major consumer of aluminium, for example in construction, transport or industry.
Together, we discuss global impacts and show how aluminium can be used in a socially and environmentally sound way – for example through recycling, strengthening the circular economy, fair reduction strategies and clear policy frameworks.
Attached you will find the invitation to the crash course with exciting impulses on the global supply chain of aluminum, a critical city tour to raw material policy locations in Berlin and insights into innovative recycling technologies by visiting an aluminum recycling plant.
The crash course is aimed at political activists and multipliers from parties, trade unions, media, social movements and environmental development organizations.
We look forward to the exchange and networking with you!
