The global race for so-called ‘critical raw materials’ is increasingly shaping European trade and industrial policy. Trade agreements remain a key tool for the EU to secure access to raw materials outside Europe. Accordingly, high on the political agenda is the planned EU-Indonesia trade agreement, which is expected to be concluded in 2026. Indonesia has the world’s largest nickel deposits, a key raw material for a wide range of applications from digital infrastructure to batteries and military use.
However, the agreement raises serious questions: It does not contain any binding guarantees for socially just, ecological or democratic standards in the extraction of raw materials. It's not just about nickel. Other sensitive areas are also affected, including palm oil and bauxite, seed management and access to medicines. The possible impact on the environment, human rights and political room for manoeuvre in Indonesia remains largely unnoticed.
In our new information brochure ‘Travel guide: Between Nickel Boom and Palm Oil Curse’, we take a critical look at the background and risks of the agreement. In the webinar, we present the publication together with Hadi Purnama from the Indonesian Legal Center for International Trade and Investment and discuss the trade policy, commodity policy and human rights implications of the EU-Indonesia agreement.
The webinar will take place in English, the guide will be published in German on 09.02.26.
