Under the slogan "simplification", the EU Commission is currently working on a far-reaching weakening of European rules. The so-called EU Omnibus procedures concern key protection standards: Health and consumer protection, environmental and climate protection, labour rights, human rights protection in supply chains and the protection of personal data in the digital space.
But what exactly is the EU Omnibus procedure about? Which laws are under scrutiny? And why do civil society organisations, trade unions, environmental associations and data protection activists warn against the dismantling of important European standards?
In this special edition of ‘Lunch & Learn’, Our lunch snack for the brain, we want to explore exactly that. We dive into the shallows of the European deregulation agenda, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen fondly refers to as ‘simplifying laws and obligations’. We deal with ‘stress tests’, reality checks, corporations that hijack European standards of protection and a fleet of buses that jeopardise the achievements of recent years in the field of environmental, climate and consumer protection at EU level.
