Between Claim and Exploitation: Europe's trade policy strategy for safeguarding raw materials

Berlin, 27 March: The "green transition" or "green transformation" of the European and thus also the German economy is currently on everyone's lips – energy and mobility transition, digitalisation, an industry driven by renewables, all this is part of it. Since few of the necessary minerals and metals are found or mined in the European Union itself, the EU relies heavily on imports from resource-rich countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Intermediate products such as semiconductors, e-batteries, etc. are also highly dependent, especially on China.

With a wealth of trade policy initiatives and instruments, the European Commission has been working on its strategy for safeguarding raw materials for several years: Trade agreements with energy and raw materials chapters, strategic raw materials partnerships, global gateway... are just some of the buzzwords. But what is behind these terms? What impact do these instruments have on the resource-rich countries of the Global South? And is this really just about the transition to a low-emission global economy?

We highlight these questions on our new website “Between entitlement and exploitation: Europe’s trade policy strategy for safeguarding raw materials”.

In addition, there is also a video of the same name on the page and on our YouTube channel, which summarises the content of the page – on German & on Spanish.

In addition, you can also find our info posters on the page “Extract-Extract-Extract – More Raw Materials Exploitation, Less Global Justice” download and order.
