Carbon dioxide storage law threatens climate protection

Chimney with smoke

Berlin, 5 November: Tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, the Bundestag is to adopt the draft law amending the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act (KSpG).

Neelke Wagner, Climate and Resource Justice Officer at PowerShift, comments:

“This law is a setback for climate action. It invites industry to further postpone climate protection. It can now rely on disposal instead of avoiding its CO2 emissions, although it is already becoming apparent that this disposal will remain an empty promise. There are no safe disposal facilities, nor does the technology for capturing carbon dioxide work reliably. In addition, especially in the case of natural gas, relevant quantities of methane emissions are added, which are not even recorded by CCS.

The switch to renewable energies and climate-friendly production processes has long been possible and overdue. Relying on this would immediately reduce emissions and make the industry fit for the future. The decision to opt for CCS is a decision against ecological and economic reason.”
