Neelke Wagner, who works at PowerShift on climate and resource justice and will speak as an expert in tomorrow's debate, comments:
“As it stands today, CCS does not contribute to climate protection. Eighty-eight percent of projects worldwide have failed. It is highly risky to rely on this technology to permanently keep emissions out of the atmosphere. After all, emissions are not avoided – the industry merely promises to transport them to final storage facilities – in reality, this has hardly been possible so far. Only part of the emissions generated are collected at all by a separation plant. Methane that escapes during the extraction and transport of natural gas, emissions from the energy consumption of the separation as well as leakages and stoppages during maintenance or accidents continue to enter the atmosphere unchecked. Genuine climate protection would mean putting all our energy into the expansion of renewable energies, electrification of industry and consistent waste prevention and circular economy.”
