Obituary of Mathias Hohmann

It was with great sadness and dismay that we heard of the death of our comrade-in-arms Mathias Hohmann. Mathias has closely supported PowerShift in our initial phase in the raw material topics with his expertise. His knowledge and contacts on the subject of raw material mining and especially its effects in Peru were unique in Germany. He knew how to connect people and support networks. These two strengths ensured that the raw materials partnership with Peru was subject to technical criticism and became the last unjust agreement of its kind.

His great passion was films. In 2013, he was one of the driving forces behind the 1. Alternative Raw Materials Week, in the context of which he showed a whole series of films in the Acud cinema in Berlin. On some of these mining documentaries, some of which were shown for the first time in Germany, he discussed with directors on site. During this time, he was also part of the mining group, which we had founded at PowerShift and, among other things, travelled together to Freiberg in Saxony to deal with the mining tradition there. Mathias was always curious and open to other views. Moreover, in his fight for justice during the time of joint work, he never lost his humor. His laughter still sounds in our ears.

In recent years, when he left Berlin for Leipzig, our contact unfortunately became increasingly rare. Mathias was only 48 years old. We are thinking of him!
