Energy financing and German corporate responsibility in the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara
Together with the climate justice group Debt for Climate and the Saharawi Youth, we discuss how we can achieve a just energy transition in Morocco and Western Sahara – and ask what this means for local fights for climate protection and corporate responsibility.
In the course of the energy transition, many companies are investing in renewable energies, while continuing to benefit from structures that have emerged from fossil-based business models. One example is Siemens Energy, which is criticised by human rights defenders for its participation in wind farms in the Moroccan-occupied territory of Western Sahara. But what role does the European financing of Moroccan energy transition projects play in this? And at whose cost are they being developed? Together, we discuss how the energy transition must be designed so that it breaks with the injustices of fossil energy policy. respect the right to territorial self-determination.
Debt for Climate is an anti-colonial grassroots movement that advocates the cancellation of the debt of the Global South.
The Saharawi Youth is a group of young Sahrawis, the indigenous people of Western Sahara, who are committed to fighting against the occupation of Western Sahara and against neo-colonial structures.
