We support the worldwide calls for an immediate ceasefire, a withdrawal of Russian troops and a peaceful, democratic reconstruction of Ukraine. At the same time, we want to draw attention to the dramatic consequences of the war outside the immediate war zone, especially in the Global South, and call for decisive countermeasures by politicians:

Enabling escape, opening escape routes, avoiding racism and discrimination between refugees

Our solidarity is with all Ukrainians and all people who are victims of the Russian attack in Ukraine; All those who need to flee and all those who are fighting for a peaceful, self-determined and democratic future for Ukraine. Our solidarity also extends to all people in Russia who oppose and refuse warfare in many ways.
All people fleeing to Germany, regardless of their residence status or citizenship, must be admitted and supported unbureaucratically. Particular attention shall be paid to the equal treatment of marginalised people, in particular BiPOC persons, Sintezza and Romnja minorities and LGBTIQ persons. All people fleeing war have the right to be protected here.

No increased rearmament of Germany, more funds for civil conflict management

We oppose the militarization of society and politics. We reject the announced special fund for the armament of the Bundeswehr in the amount of 100 billion euros and a permanently increased arms budget of 2 billion euros.% of gross domestic product. Beyond the already excessive level of Western military spending, this policy of rearmament will devour important resources that we actually need for social compensation, civil conflict management and development cooperation, and social-ecological transformation.

Global solidarity: Moving away from fossils, cars and meat towards a peaceful energy, transport, raw materials and agricultural economy

This war brings death and suffering to the people of Ukraine, but it also threatens to have dramatic global repercussions: UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns of a "hurricane of starvation“. If there are major cuts in the export of grain and fertilisers from Ukraine and Russia and therefore prices rise worldwide, millions of people are at risk of starvation and malnutrition by next year. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that the number of undernourished people worldwide will increase by 8 to 13 million in 2022/23 if the conflict in Ukraine continues for months. African countries and the Middle East are particularly affected.
The Russian war machine is controlled by the Coal, oil and gas industry financed. It fuels both the invasion of Ukraine and the climate crisis. Together with Ukrainian environmental and climate activists, we therefore demand that the dependence on fossil fuels be ended as soon as possible, that all imports of fossil fuels from Russia be dispensed with and that all fossil fuels be phased out as soon as possible. (https://www.with-ukraine.org/)!
The now openly erupted energy conflict with Russia and the increased energy and raw material prices mainly affect poorer population groups in this country and people in poorer countries who depend on raw materials and energy imports. These drastic social consequences must be absorbed as much as possible in solidarity.
A socio-ecological transformation of our economy and way of life, which had long been necessary to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis, is now all the more urgent as a transformation of the “developing country Germany”:

Energy and mobility transition: In just a few years, we will have to switch our energy supply in Berlin, Germany and Europe to an energy-efficient, renewable energy system. To do this, we need to get out of fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal) as soon as possible and distribute the resulting burdens in a socially equitable manner. Renewable energies can be part of a free and peaceful life if their production, international trade and the necessary raw materials economy are carried out in accordance with climate protection and human rights. This also applies to the transport system: Here we need to move away from fuel- and resource-consuming private cars and towards climate-friendly, equitable mobility.

Raw material transition: German industry imports not only oil, gas and coal from Russia, but also raw materials such as palladium, nickel, copper, raw aluminium, iron and steel refiners. There are repeated reports of environmental and human rights violations in the mining of these raw materials in Russia, even if critical civil society can hardly work freely and comprehensively on the ground. In addition, some of the commodity-producing companies belong to Russian oligarchs from the Putin environment. Trade in raw materials is not yet subject to sanctions. Instead of continuing to rely heavily on imports of primary metals, it is necessary to expand the circular economy. The reduction targets for the use of primary raw materials announced in the coalition agreement must be specified and pursued with concrete measures of a raw materials turnaround.

Agricultural transition: In the agri-food sector, given the global demand for food, we must not continue to waste huge amounts of grain and feed as well as enormous land areas for meat production. We need to switch to a climate-friendly and globally just agriculture with a drastically lower proportion of meat. This means that we have to produce and consume our food in such a way that we do not unfairly (imperially) access the climate, land and natural resources in other countries and cause hunger there.

Berlin, 21.3.2022
PowerShift e.V.

Escape routes for all – no new wave of rearmament – energy, transport, raw materials & agricultural turnaround away from Fossilen Berlin, 21 March 2022 We condemn the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
