Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets against TTIP, the EU-US trade and investment protection agreement. The agreement has been in the icebox for over two years. Now the EU and the US want to start negotiations again. Supposedly only about industrial tariffs and conformity assessments, but also some other issues will play a role. The mandates for the negotiations could be given by the governments of the EU member states in March and negotiations could start quickly.<\/p>\n

Lobbycontrol and PowerShift have jointly published a first analysis of the draft mandates for regulatory cooperation, which is available for download in English.<\/p>\n

We also call for:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. transparency<\/strong>: Disclosure of the mandate that the Council adopts today. Instead of publishing the mandate only between mid-March and the end of May, Member State governments should do so immediately. The European Commission also recommends this.<\/li>\n
  2. No negotiations with the US under pressure<\/strong>: The US is exerting massive pressure in the interests of its competitive agricultural and Internet companies. This is not a good precondition for balanced negotiations. The European Parliament also recommends that negotiations not be opened.<\/li>\n
  3. No regulatory cooperation in trade agreements<\/strong>: Regulatory cooperation degrades important consumer and environmental protection to \u2018trade barriers\u2019. This perspective is detrimental to people and the environment. In addition, it creates additional possibilities for lobbyists to influence legislation. If anything, regulatory cooperation must take place under democratic control.<\/li>\n<\/ol>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
