Everyone is talking about Trump's trade war. Meanwhile, the EU is expanding its trade relations with countries in the Global South almost unobserved. Same with Indonesia. On 23 September, after nine years of negotiations, the EU Commission and Indonesia signed the CEPA, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Among other things, the EU wants to secure access to critical raw materials (e.g. nickel) from Indonesia. But what does the Indonesian population have to do with it? And to what extent does this free trade agreement promote economic growth at the expense of the environment and climate?
