Online event "Raw materials at all costs? Globally just raw materials policy now!”
11. September 2024 @ 17:30 - 19:00

As one of the world's five largest consumers of raw materials, Germany is highly dependent on imports from abroad. The problem: Their entire life cycle causes negative consequences for people, the environment and the climate. Germany therefore has a special global responsibility.
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the war against Ukraine, raw materials policy has become increasingly important in Germany and the EU. The vulnerability of supply chains and the dependence on raw materials became clear. However, despite initial progress through supply chain laws and the planned expansion of the circular economy, German and European raw materials policy is unfair from a global perspective. It is still primarily aimed at securing the supply of raw materials to industry. The "green" transformation threatens to take place in the Global South at the expense of people and the environment.
In the online event, experts from German and European civil society will shed light on the following questions:
In which direction has the German and European raw materials policy developed? How does it affect resource-mining countries in the Global South? What do people in the Global South demand and what can we counter the influence of industry? How can raw materials policy in Germany and the EU become more equitable globally?
Speakers:
Perrine Fournier, campaigner for trade and forest near Fern
Hannah Pilgrim, Co-ordinator of the Civil Society Alliance Working Group on Raw Materials PowerShift e.V.
Moderation:
Lara Louisa Siever, Policy Officer on Raw Materials, Business and Human Rights, INKOTA-netzwerk e.V.
The event will be held in German and English with simultaneous translation.
