Panel discussion: “100 Days of Remunicipalisation of District Heating Berlin – First Assessment and Future Perspectives”
10. October 2024 @ 18:00 - 20:00

After Berlin has bought back the district heating network and the associated plants from Vattenfall, we want to take stock: How does Berlin Energie und Wärme cooperate with the municipal utilities, Berlin state companies, the Senate and the districts? How is BEW set up for the upcoming decarbonisation and how is it planned? What are or should be the opportunities for civil society and citizens to participate?
Until now, district heating in Berlin - as in most other cities in Germany - has been based on combustion and thus generates high CO2 emissions. In addition, there are human rights violations and environmental destruction in countries from which the capital obtains these fuels. How can district heating become part of a climate-friendly future? How can remunicipalisation help the state-owned company to live up to its responsibility for climate protection and affordable care?
In Hamburg, among other things, district heating was remunicipalised a few years ago. We want to learn from the experiences there: What does it take to make remunicipalisation a success for the city and the climate?
