Against toxic and unfair trade agreements - Alliance of civil society organisations calls for a new trade policy at the EU-CELAC summit
Berlin/Brussels, 13 July 2023: A coalition of more than 450 civil society organisations from Latin America and the EU, which opposes the signing of the trade agreements between the EU, Mercosur, Mexico and Chile, calls on government representatives to send a strong signal AGAINST the trade (and investment) agreements between the EU, Mexico, Chile and Mercosur. The background is a meeting of government representatives on 17 and 18 July at the EU-CELAC summit in Brussels. Instead, they are to prepare the ground for a new era of equitable and sustainable cooperation between the two regions (the full explanation can be found here). here).
In addition, more than 50 civil society organisations from the EU and Latin America are organising events to accompany the EU-CELAC Summit and are calling for a new trade relationship between Latin America and the EU. During one Half-day conference in the European Parliament On Monday morning, 17 July, representatives of trade unions, indigenous movements, environmental and trade justice NGOs, together with MEPs from the Left, the Greens/EFA and the S&D Group, invite to discuss alternative ways of trade and strengthening cooperation between regions.
Following the conference, there will be a protest rally in front of the EU Parliament and an evening event on the topic of just transformation for Latin America. The full programme as well as a list of all speakers and host organisations can be found here here.
