EU Council meeting in Brussels: PowerShift calls for a halt to Latin America free trade agreements

Berlin, 21 March 2023: On the occasion of the European Council meeting in Brussels from 23 to 24 March, the Network of Fair World Trade is organising a
Action in front of the Federal Chancellery. The aim is to draw attention to the contradictions of the EU trade agenda, in particular the agreements with Mercosur, Mexico and Chile, with regard to the protection of climate, environment and human rights. We call on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to oppose the signing of the above-mentioned trade agreements in the spirit of a globally just, climate-protecting trade policy, thus following the example of Austria, the Netherlands and France.

“By ratifying the agreements with Latin America, the Federal Government is pushing forward a neocolonial foreign economic policy that benefits people and nature on both fronts.
It hurts the Atlantic. The announced declaration of interpretation of the EU-Mercosur agreement, which will be negotiated in all secrecy, will not change this,” says Bettina Müller, Head of Trade and Investment Policy at PowerShift e.V.

Uwe Hiksch, member of the Federal Board of Naturefriends of Germany, also explains: “The EU-Mercosur agreement must be prevented. With this agreement, the
